8vo. 5 vols. First edition of Parts II-IV, second revised edition of Part I, which had appeared originally in 1819. This edition of Part I presents a dramatically expanded text, marking Grimm's realization that all philology must be based on rigorous adherence to the laws of sound-change. It is in this second edition that the celebrated "Grimm's Law" is first formulated, stating the correspondences of consonants in the older Indo-Germanic, Low and High German languages. Ownership inscription on title, and library stamp on verso of title of each volume, some light foxing; buckram-backed boards. (PMM281)

童話で有名な「グリム兄弟」のヤコブ・グリム (1785-1863) が、印欧祖語とゲルマン語との子音の対応関係に音韻法則があることを見出した「グリムの法則」（いわゆる第一次子音推移）を初めて発表した書です。本書第１部の初版は1819年でしたが、グリムの法則が登場するのは大幅に増補された1822年刊の第１部で、本セットに収められているのも後者です。（第２部 - 第４部は初版）
