8vo. First edition. 456, (24) pp., with engraved frontispiece showing the interior of an 18th century kitchen; also 11 plates (two folding) of cuts of meat and table settings. Contemporary sheep, rebacked, spine gilt. (a bit rubbed), joint damaged and front cover about to detach. Signature on title-page of M.A. Thornhill dated 1791; early armorial bookplate of George Thornhill, and ink notes of the front flyleaf of a recent owner.

1790年代にイギリスで出版された料理本の中で人気のあった本の一冊で、1800年までに第10版まで版を重ねたといわれています。スープ、肉料理などのレシピに加え、肉や魚を切り分ける方法が図解入りで収録され、新鮮な肉を見分ける方法、一年を通した家庭菜園の運営法などについても書かれています。
